I created a gallery and got all the photos to list in the back end. However, when I create a menu item for showing them, it says that I do not have permission to view the photos. I do not see any permissions settings for the component. The gallery directory is set to 755.

The site is running Joomla 2.5 and the component installed without errors.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Currently the menu item is unpublished to keep me from getting lots of email from site visitors telling me the gallery doesn't work. But I can publish it if you need to look at it.

Is it you administrator section protected by .htaccess file?
This can happen, also, if you put you images in administrator section, or some other protected section of your site.
